Filmed in January and February 2018, during the worst winter for the NHS on record ‘Hospital’ told the story of the health service in unprecedented times.
Despite the pressures of limited resources and increasing patient numbers, the series showed the extraordinary work of some of Team NUH’s 15,000 staff as they push the boundaries of what is possible with cutting edge treatments and life-saving operations.
Over six episodes ‘Hospital’ gave us the stories of patients in children’s and adult Intensive Care units, the Major Trauma Centre, the Emergency Department, and undergoing spinal, maxillofacial and cancers surgeries. We also saw some our oldest and most seriously ill patients, in hospital as a result of the increase in respiratory illnesses over the winter and coping with dementia.
Hospital also showed the extraordinary dilemmas and decision-making which happen every day for consultants, surgeons and managers and the impact these decisions have on patients and their families.
It was over a year in the planning, filming, editing and then broadcast from 26 March for six weeks on BBC Two. During that time every part of NUH and many, many members of staff and volunteers were involved in making it happen. For all of that hard work we are very grateful and very proud.
The biggest thanks goes to our patients and their families for allowing us to share their stories and follow them throughout their care at NUH.
