Cancer patient cycles Italian Alps again thanks to NUH Urology team
A 72 year-old fitness fanatic has once again conquered one of Europe’s most gruelling cycle challenges thanks to the skills, care and treatment from Consultant Urologist, Gurminder Mann and his team at the Urology Centre, City Hospital, part of Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH).
Brian Peto, from Long Eaton, was diagnosed with cancer of the right Kidney in February 2018 and underwent a Nephroureterectomy in March 2018 to remove the Kidney and Ureter. He had taken part in the Gran Fondo Stelvio Santini for the two years previous to his diagnosis, which is a climb up the second highest alpine mountain pass in Europe (the Stelvio Pass), a total 2760 metres (9000 feet). The operation and recovery period meant Brian was unable to compete last year.
But after making a full recovery Brian was able to once again scale the Stelvio Pass, completing the Gran Fondo Stelvio Santini on 1 and 2 June.
Brian said: “It’s been a really tough road back. I wasn’t sure I’d be able to get back to doing the things I love.
“When the nurse came for her follow-up visit and said I can expect to have a normal life expectancy, you can imagine how I felt after that day. Overjoyed would be an understatement!
“I would like to convey my thanks and gratitude to Mr. Mann, Mr. Walton, Mr. Bazo and everyone who has been a part of my cancer experience. Their skills, knowledge and actions have enabled me to recover and regain my health and fitness to the point where I can now continue competitive cycling and running.”
Mr. Mann added: It’s wonderful to be able help Brian get back a big part of his life. His strength of character certainly helped his recovery and it’s no surprise to any of us that he’s up those mountains again.
“Brian has proven that, firstly, age, and secondly, cancer, don’t have to be barriers to doing what you want to do. As a fellow cyclist I am overwhelmed by his achievement and hope he’s not too saddle sore. He is an inspiration to us all.”
