Hayward House is a Specialist Palliative care unit, in the grounds of the city campus, this can often be confused with a hospice but is not one. Hayward House offers Specialist Palliative care for individuals with complexity at various points of a person’s condition. This support can be from diagnosis, through the interim period of advancing disease, to end of life and care after death. It aims to enrich the quality of life through the skills and experience of a multi-disciplinary team.
The inpatient unit at Hayward House has 20 beds, divided over 4 bays and 4 side rooms. Patients are admitted either directly from home, referrals are made by Community healthcare professionals, or from an NUH bed. Patients are admitted under the care of a Palliative Care Consultant for a short period, ideally no more than a few weeks. Many patients return home following their admission, whilst others may spend their last few weeks and days with us.

The Palliative Care Virtual Ward supports patients at home for a short period, ideally no more than 2 weeks, to try and avoid a hospital admission or to reduce a hospital stay. Daily telephone support is provided by a Palliative Care Consultant and ACP, to manage complex symptoms alongside their existing community teams.
Our counsellors provide counselling and pre and post Bereavement support to patients and their significant others, including children. This service is provided to both inpatients and outpatients.
Following a health professional referral to the team, a course of holistic therapy is offered to patients and their carers, with the aim of promoting relaxation and a sense of wellbeing. Therapies are provided in our purpose-built therapy unit or at the bedside in the inpatient unit. Therapies offered include massage, aromatherapy, reflexology, hypnotherapy, Reiki and Indian head massage.
