24 Hours in A&E

Channel 4’s award-winning documentary series 24 Hours in A&E is returning to the Queen’s Medical Centre to film a second series.

Cameras film around the clock in some of Britain's busiest A&E departments, where stories of life, love and loss unfold every day

We first welcomed cameras into the Emergency Department (ED) at the QMC in 2021 for the first series filmed outside of London.

The series is filmed using remote cameras that are fixed to the walls.

Interesting facts about the filming of 24 Hours in A&E

Here are some interesting facts and figures about how the show was made when it came to Nottingham.

  • The Garden TV produced the series for Channel 4

  • The series is now in its 10th year and to celebrate, it was decided to move the show outside of London. Nottingham was picked for being one of the busiest A&E department in the country, alongside having a major trauma centre

  • The series was filmed from September 2021-October 2021

  • The production crew filmed for 46 days straight in the emergency department and also filmed in other areas such as surgery

  • A total of 2,000 patients consented to being filmed

  • A total of 1,000 staff consented to being filmed

  • To film the programme, 126 fixed cameras were used, plus two hand held cameras to cover areas like x-ray

  • From the filming, a total of 24 episodes have been made

  • Each episode is filmed over a 24 hour period in the hospital

  • It take around nine weeks to edit every episode

  • Over 100 production team working on location work in shifts 24 hours a day to make the series. 

24 hours in A&E - filming consent

The production team would welcome the opportunity to speak to patients, and those accompanying them, about the filming. However, if attending our Emergency Department during these dates, you are under no obligation whatsoever to take part and your decision will have no impact on your treatment.

Should you choose to be filmed, a member of the production team will contact you before the programme is broadcast. Please be assured that no identifiable personal details will be released or broadcast, without your prior consent.

What if you do not want to take part?

We respect and understand that some patients and their families/friends will not wish to take part. Please be assured that the production team will not broadcast any identifiable footage unless you have given prior consent. If you’re incidentally caught in shot, you will be appropriately obscured.

Members of the production team will be scattered around the Emergency Department at all times. Feel free to ask them any questions or raise any concerns you might have.
