24 hours in A&E Series 2, Episode 2: A Song from the Darkest Hour

The next episode of Channel 4’s fly-on-the-wall documentary series, 24 hours in A&E continues on our TV screens tonight, Thursday 20 February at 9pm.

The RTS award-winning documentary is back for a brand-new series from Queen's Medical Centre (QMC), Nottingham - one of the busiest A&E departments in Europe. A place where stories of life, love and loss unfold every single day.

The second episode follows two people from different backgrounds who have both faced huge challenges but found their place with people who continue to inspire them.

55-year-old Sister Lou is rushed to QMC after being knocked off her bicycle. Having been a Senior Nurse at QMC for 32 years, her colleagues are shocked at Lou’s arrival and concerned that she may have suffered serious internal bleeding as well as fractures to her shoulder. While the team work together to stabilise her, the staff in the Emergency Department (ED) share their tragic loss of a much-loved colleague in a motorbike accident and how they ensure that his legacy and memory will live on.

57-year-old Shanty Folk singer Stuart is in the Resuscitation ward after falling 6ft from a ladder, causing major damage to his ankle. While Orthopaedic specialists work to realign his bones and put in motion a surgery plan, we hear how Stuart suffered with his mental health whilst working as a security guard. An experience that pushed him to the edge, but with the love and support of his wife of forty years, this led him to change direction in life.

Throughout the episode, we also hear from different colleagues across ED who share their experiences of banding together in tough times and looking out for each other like a family.

During September and October 2021, NUH welcomed cameras into QMC for the first series to be filmed outside of London. Cameras returned to QMC in 2023 to bring you another series of this inspiring documentary.

24 Hours in A&E, which is made by The Garden, part of ITV Studios, has become one of the most popular documentary series on Channel 4, having aired more than 300 episodes. You can catch up on previous episodes at channel4.com.
