NUH unveils art exhibition celebrating colleagues for Black History Month
An art exhibition celebrating colleagues from across Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) was unveiled on 18 October to coincide with Black History Month.
The exhibition, installed at Nottingham City Hospital, has been designed to celebrate the diversity of our staff and to allow them to share what Black History Month’s theme of ‘reclaiming the narrative’ means to them.
Lovelyn Umeloh, Matron for Community Engagement and Innovation, was photographed for the exhibition and said: “Reclaiming narratives to me is a movement of cultural challenges towards inclusion and equitable global representation by shining a brighter light on all the positive stories that shows who we are”.
The exhibition showcases photographs of staff of Black heritage and was commissioned in partnership with the Arts at NUH Programme, the REACH network and Global Health Partnerships. Funded by Nottingham Hospitals Charity the display has our values and commitment to promoting kindness and inclusivity at its heart.
Clive Clarke, Director of Inclusion, said: “This was a great project to work on and a fantastic opportunity to give colleagues the chance to express what reclaiming the narrative means to them.
“At NUH we have colleagues from more than 130 different countries and they all bring so much knowledge and experience to our hospitals. With this exhibition we aim to recognise and celebrate how truly lucky we are to have such a diverse workforce.”
Local photographer, Lamar Francois, who took the photographs for the exhibition said: “One thing which was memorable about this project was how rewarding it was being able to meet such a wide variety of people and be able to hear their stories and how they came to work for the NHS – all contributing with a range of different skills.
“Everyone I was able to meet and work with was very grateful to have me tell their stories and be photographed and I really enjoyed the experience.”
Moving into November the exhibition will expand to include international staff who will continue to share what makes them proud of their heritage.
