Black History Month: “I am proud to be part of the wonderful NHS family”

In our final piece celebrating our staff, Aquiline Chivinge MBE, Assistant Director of Nursing, Midwifery, and AHP Inclusion, explains what Reclaiming Narratives means to her.

“As the first generation and internationally educated nurse from my family to work in the NHS, Black History Month is about celebrating success at individual level,” said Aquiline.

“I was awarded an MBE in the 2020 New Year’s Honours List for services to patients from ethnic minority backgrounds. I was presented with the 2020 Chief Nursing Officer for England Silver Award, for services to nursing. At Trust level, it’s about celebrating the contributions of global majority staff, some of whom have left families behind to serve the NHS. It’s about acknowledging the expertise and commitment they bring to the NHS.

“My culture and community have provided me with the tools to successfully navigate a high-pressure and dynamic work environment. Values such as perseverance, adaptability, and collaboration were instilled in me from a young age, allowing me to approach challenges with resilience and foster positive relationships in diverse professional settings within NHS.

“I have worked with some extraordinary people and fantastic teams. I am proud to be part of the wonderful NHS family.”
