24 Hours in A&E Series 1 Episode 21 – A Risk Worth Taking

The next episode of 24 Hours in A&E follows the stories of people who have taken huge risks in their life.

The award-winning series returns from its home at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust’s (NUH) Queen’s Medical Centre (QMC) tonight (Monday 29 July) at 9pm on Channel 4 - one of the busiest A&E departments in the country. A place where stories of life, love and loss unfold every single day.

49-year-old Peter is rushed into QMC by air ambulance after crashing his motorbike on the way to work as a HGV driver. Doctors are worried about a serious thigh fracture and that he may also have a broken pelvis. While doctors assess the extent of his injuries, we hear from his wife Holly, about their life together and their experience bringing up their son Lucas.

29-year-old motorcyclist James has come into QMC after crashing into a road sign. Dr Rupert who is a motorcyclist himself treats his injuries and reflects on the risks and joys of motorcycling as well as the risks taken by the patients he sees on a daily basis.

Retired coal miner Alfred is in majors with severe chest pain. As the team carry out tests to determine its cause, we hear from his son Tony who tells us how Alfred worked in the mines as a teenager. And later, how he and his family were tested in financially difficult times.

During September and October 2021, NUH welcomed cameras into the Emergency Department (ED) at QMC for the first series to be filmed outside of London.

A total of 24 programmes were recorded and the first 17 episodes have already been broadcast, giving viewers a look inside one of the country’s busiest accident and emergency departments.

24 Hours in A&E, which is made by The Garden, part of ITV Studios, has become one of the most popular documentary series on Channel 4, having aired more than 300 episodes.

Cameras returned to QMC in May 2023 to film another series of the award-winning documentary.
