24 Hours in A&E Series 1 Episode 22 – A Shoulder to Lean On

The next episode of Channel 4’s 24 Hours in A&E, will broadcast on Monday 5 August at 9pm.

This will be the last episode in the current run, with the series expected to continue later in the year.

The series returns from its home at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust’s (NUH) Queen’s Medical Centre (QMC) - one of the busiest A&E departments in the country. A place where stories of life, love and loss unfold every single day.

57-year-old Jane is rushed to QMC with multiple traumatic injuries after she was hit by a car while walking home. The major trauma team work hard to stabilise her and discover a fractured pelvis amongst her many other severe life threatening injuries. Whilst she’s treated in resus, we hear how she has been a support to her family and in particular how she supported her niece Rachel, when her father fell from a crane and died tragically.

In the urgent treatment unit, 30-year-old performer Claudia has injured both wrists after falling from height whilst practising an acrobatic routine. She describes how her childhood felt different to her peers and her journey to being diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome and how that has not defined or held her back.

93-year-old Dorothy has been brought to resus by ambulance after breaking her leg in a fall at home. Emergency Department Assistant Brett is looking after her and tells us how he ended up working in A&E and how he got his bedside manner from his late mum.

During September and October 2021, NUH welcomed cameras into the Emergency Department (ED) at QMC for the first series to be filmed outside of London.

A total of 24 programmes were recorded and the first 17 episodes have already been broadcast, giving viewers a look inside one of the country’s busiest accident and emergency departments.

24 Hours in A&E, which is made by The Garden, part of ITV Studios, has become one of the most popular documentary series on Channel 4, having aired more than 300 episodes.

Cameras returned to QMC in May 2023 to film another series of the award-winning documentary.
