The Chair is responsible for the effective leadership of the Trust Board. They work alongside the Chief Executive who is responsible and accountable for the strategic and operational leadership of the Trust.
Nick Carver joined us as our new Chair on 1 February 2022.
Nick has worked in the NHS for 42 years joining as a hospital porter, then qualifying as a registered nurse before moving into health service management. Nick has held several senior roles in the NHS in the East of England, West Midlands, West Country and South Wales. He joined East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust as Chief Executive in November 2002, retiring in December 2021 having held the role for 19 years.
Nick is passionately committed to leadership development and has supported the Aspiring Chief Executive programme, was the lead for a widely praised Aspiring Directors Programme and previously chaired the Midlands and East Talent Board, which established improved mechanisms for the development of senior talent within the NHS.
Anthony May joined us as our new Chief Executive on 1 September 2022.
Anthony was Chief Executive of Nottinghamshire County Council from April 2015 to August 2022, with responsibility for the council’s £1.1 billion budget and around 18,000 staff who work directly and indirectly for the council. He was also Chair of the Midlands Engine Operating Board for five years and Chair of the Association of County Council Chief Executives for over two years.
Anthony was also one of the nine chief executive leads (representing the East Midlands) who worked with the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, on the response to Covid-19 and the strategic direction of local government.
Non-Executive Directors are members of the Trust Board who share the corporate responsibility for ensuring that the Trust is run efficiently and effectively. They use their expertise, interest and experience to scrutinise and monitor performance.
Clare Urmston is currently the Chief Financial Officer at Anemoi Marine Technologies Limited and sits on the ICAEW Business Committee. Clare recently acted as Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee and Non-Exec Director of Game Digital plc until the business was recently acquired by Sports Direct plc. Clare’s former roles include CFO of Symingtons Limited, Interim CFO of Wilko Retail Limited and FD of W’Innovate Limited. Prior to this Clare held a number of Senior Finance posts at Northern Foods plc. Clare qualified with KPMG in 2002 and was awarded an ICAEW FD Excellence award in 2013.
Claire joined the Trust Board on 1 January 2020.
Tracey Blackwell has over 36 years of experience working in local government in wide range of district and city councils. As an Environmental Health Officer Tracey’s early career focussed on a wide range of community-based issues including - housing conditions, food safety, infectious diseases, pollution control, public health and health & safety in the workplace. Tracey joined the Trust Board as a Non-Executive Director on 27 September.
David Bates is Professor of Oncology at the University of Nottingham. He is an internationally known researcher in how blood vessels grow and has used his research to develop new treatment possibilities for blindness, cancer, cardiovascular disease and other conditions. He led the development, funding and establishment of the University of Nottingham Centre for Cancer Sciences, a multi-million pound initiative that brings together an extensive and expanding cohort, currently 50, cancer academic groups integrating interdisciplinary approaches from epidemiology to molecular genetics, in a state of the art new building as part of the University of Nottingham Biodiscovery Institute.
Prof Bates is also Founder and has been Director of three spin out biotech companies, Exonate Ltd, Emenda Therapeutics, and IsomAb Limited two of which are based in Nottingham. His research collaborations have been global, working on bile duct cancer in Thailand and Laos, as well as working on colorectal cancer and other cancers at the University of South Africa (UNiSA) and at University of Pretoria, where he was appointed Professor Extraordinaire in 2021. David and his family have lived in the Nottingham area since 2013 and regularly takes part in public understanding of science events in the area.
Mark Chivers is currently the Government Chief Property Officer at the Cabinet Office. He has 17 years’ experience at Board level in both the private and public sector, including as Director of Estates at Boots UK, Director of the Nottingham Enterprise Zone for Walgreens Boots Alliance and Director of Shared Services for Alliance Boots.
Simon is Medical Director (Primary and Community Care) in NHS England’s Workforce, Training and Education Directorate, with responsibility for GP/ Primary Care, Dentistry, Mental Health, and Wellbeing. He was Health Education England’s Freedom to Speak up Guardian. He was previously Director and Dean of Education and Quality (DEQ), Health Education England (HEE), Midlands and East and HEE Lead for Primary Care, prior to that the Postgraduate Dean East of England and before that GP Dean, East Midlands.
Simon is a GP and is a Fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners, a Trustee and Council member. He is the current Provost of the Leicester Faculty of the RCGP.
Suni as she prefers to be called is Professor of Human Rights and Gender Justice Practice at the world leading Helena Kennedy Centre for International Justice, Sheffield Hallam University. She is an award-winning academic, activist and advocate who is passionate about combatting gender-based violence, advancing women & girls rights across the world and shaping justice sector reform and architecture to promote human rights for all. She is a cutting-edge thought leader who champions rights, equality, diversity, and inclusion. Sunita's work is underpinned by a commitment to making human rights and justice accessible to the most marginalised individuals and communities in the world. Sunita is wonderful mentor and champion of others, and actively supports the next generation of human rights activists and academics. Sunita is passionate about protecting and championing human rights through fusing practice, cutting edge research and academic rigour to deliver international projects that transform lives.
Suni is Nottingham born, and after living in other parts of the UK and beyond has returned to Nottingham and lives with her family.
Jason Ward is a chartered accountant with over 25 years of blue chip experience. He qualified with EY in 1998 where he held various roles including Audit Senior Manager.
Jason then worked at Boots UK for 18 years, of which the last 10 years he held numerous Director roles most recently the Finance Director for Operations. He has significant experience of working on audit committees and large scale change programmes. He continues to be a Director of the Boots Pension scheme.
Serbjit Kaur has over 35 years expertise within the public healthcare sector, both as a clinician and in provided professional and clinical leadership to dental profession in England. Clinical experience as a dentist, along with Executive roles in both the Department of Health and NHS England, she brings a broad range of experience and expertise.
Serbjit is committed to improving quality and the experience of all patients and staff. Serbjit currently sits on the Statutory Assurance Panel for the General Dental Council and is a partner in two dental practices. On her appointment Serbjit said: “It is a privilege to be joining the Trust Board at Nottingham University Hospitals and I look forward to collaborating with the team to bring about improvements for local people and staff.”
Craig Wilcockson has over 20 years of experience in employee engagement, business and cultural change, talent management and organisational development gained in a variety of large national and international businesses. He is currently Chief People Officer and Executive member at Martson Holdings. Prior to this he was Chief People Officer for Watkin Jones plc and prior to this he was Group People & Strategy Director for the Orbit Group. Craig joined the Trust Board on 1 January 2020 and chairs our People and Culture Committee.
