Diabetes - Carbohydrate Content of Adult Patient Menus
How can this information help me?
Information for patients with diabetes who are carbohydrate counting during their hospital stay.
Department of Nutrition and Dietetics
This page and its content is to be used as a guide for people living with diabetes who are carbohydrate counting. It intends to provide the carbohydrate values for foods and drinks available during your hospital stay.
This information can be used to estimate the amount of carbohydrate to assist with insulin dose adjustment, where applicable.
We have listed the carbohydrate portion in grams, based on the average portion size provided from the menu, rounded to the nearest whole number.
Portion sizes may vary so we strongly advise you do a visual assessment of your carbohydrate portion.
You can use this resource in combination with the ‘Carbs & Cals’ book or the ‘Carbs and Cals’ smart phone application.
Product labelling will always display the most up-to-date nutritional information and so it is encouraged to use the carbohydrate values on food labels whenever possible.
Note: The carbohydrates from vegetables and salad are digested slowly so may not significantly affect your blood glucose levels. We advise you not to count their carbohydrate content (unless you did this pre-admission) and have marked their carbohydrate content with a ‘*’.
