Sector Based work academies (SBWA)

Sector-based work academies are a way to create a skilled workforce for your business. The schemes are available to help those who are ready for work, and receiving benefits, to secure employment. Sector-based work academies are designed to recruit a workforce with the right skills to sustain and grow your business.

A sector-based academy can last up to six weeks and include the following:

  • pre-employment training, including CV writing, interview techniques and workplace etiquette
  • sector based skills – depending on the available job roles, this will be training based around the company. For example at NUH, if the roles available are for Healthcare Assistant’s, you would complete units from a clinical qualification. If the roles were in catering, you would complete units from a catering qualification etc.

Learners will remain on benefits throughout the period of the sector-based work academy. Jobcentre Plus will pay any travel and childcare costs whilst they are on the work experience placement.

Access Training and NUH are working in partnership around SBWA’s and are committed to ensuring that people looking for employment have the essential skills to succeed in the workplace. SBWA’s are put in place to help people have a better chance of being accepted for an interview.

Prince's Trust

About The Prince’s Trust

Youth charity The Prince’s Trust helps disadvantaged young people to get their lives on track. It supports 11 to 30 year-olds who are unemployed and those struggling at school and at risk of exclusion. Many of the young people helped by The Trust are in or leaving care, facing issues such as homelessness or mental health problems, or have been in trouble with the law.

The Trust’s programmes give vulnerable young people the practical and financial support needed to stabilise their lives, helping develop self-esteem and skills for work. Three in four young people supported by The Prince’s Trust move into work, education or training. The Prince of Wales’s charity has helped 870,000 young people since 1976 and supports over 100 more each day.

Get into programmes

Get into programmes are developed and run with employers. Young people who are work-ready but lack vocational skills are given the opportunity to develop relevant skills and work experience to enable them to move into a sustainable job in a specific sector.

Young people get the chance to attend a Taster Day which allows them to see if the programme is right for them and also allows the Delivery Partner and The Prince’s Trust to choose the most suitable young people for the programme.
