The people behind life-changing research at NUH recognised
The people who develop, plan and deliver clinical research at Nottingham’s hospitals were recognised for their achievements today (Thursday 6 June).
Their work supported almost 11,500 to take part in research at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) in 2023/24. The winners, nominated by their colleagues, patients and volunteers, are involved in life-changing research into new cancer treatments, lung diseases, children’s acute care and permanent hearing loss.
The awards are held every year by the Research & Innovation department to recognise staff and raise the profile of research which benefits thousands of patients in Nottingham and beyond.
In 2023-24, there were over 530 research trials taking place at NUH, which offer NUH patients access to new treatments and therapies, enhance the care provided and add to the body of knowledge which will improve healthcare in the future. This year's award winners include experts in research into neurological diseases, cystic fibrosis, chronic Hepatitis B and COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease).
Professor Ian Hall, Co-Clinical Director of Research & Innovation and Director of the NIHR Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre, said:
“In Nottingham, we are ambitious to grow our research and speed up discoveries so that more patients living in our city and further afield can enjoy better health and benefit from the best possible treatments for both them and their families.
“In 2024, yet again, our staff made an immense contribution to us achieving this ambition in so many ways. It is truly inspiring to hear about their achievements and important that we take this occasion to thank them through our Research Excellence awards.”
Professor Stephen Ryder, Co-Clinical Director of Research & Innovation and Director of the NIHR Clinical Research Facility said:
“The awards enable us to recognise the contribution that our volunteers make to our research; both the people who take part in clinical trials here and the growing number of local people who give their time to support our teams in delivering research for NUH’s patients.
“Research is a vital part of what we do at NUH and without the dedication shown by our staff, patients and volunteers we would not be able to make the progress we are in finding new ways to prevent and treat disease.”
