Celebrating National Apprenticeship Week 2025 at NUH
Happy National Apprenticeship Week 2025!
At NUH, we are celebrating our apprentices across our Trust. This 2025 National Apprenticeship Week puts on spotlight on how an apprenticeship has helped our apprentices excel in their career!
Over this past year, we have seen apprentices start and complete in apprenticeships such as Customer Service, Data Protection, Clinical Engineering, Theatre Practitioners and Nursing.
We advertise apprentice job roles at our Trust throughout the year, which means that you could start your apprenticeship at any time.

Meet Menuka, Critical Care Nurse

My name is Menuka Basnet, and I am so happy to share my experience as a Graduate Nursing Apprentice of NUH.
My nursing apprenticeships have offered me a combination of theoretical classroom learning opportunities and hands-on, on-the-job experience in a healthcare setting. This allows apprentices to apply the knowledge right away under the supervision of experienced nurses resulting in a well-rounded skill set that includes clinical skills, knowledge and competencies, communication, problem-solving, patient care, and critical thinking abilities while earning a wage and gaining valuable experience within a real working environment.
I was lucky enough to be able to work in the NUH for a long time in various roles and departments, which gave me full skills, knowledge and plenty of experience and confidence to apply for the job.
Also, being a mum of two young children, the Associate Degree in Nursing to a Registered Nurse route was the best option for me as it could provide me with full financial support and avoid student debt.
On the one hand, the best part of the nursing apprentice was I was still an employee of the NUH, which enabled me to continue the length of service with NUH without a break.
On the other hand, I was released fully to go to university for theoretical knowledge like the other students. I cannot thank enough the recruitment team of the NUH for providing me with this amazing opportunity and fulfilling my dream to be a nurse and do the job I was born for.
The most interesting part of the whole program was the ‘Clinical Supervision’ from the trust, which involved meeting and discussing (with the group of apprentices of the cohort) the clinical skills that we learned or struggled to learn, as well as the problems that we were experiencing on the placement. This was the best part of the program for me, because we could openly share our feelings, develop confidence in clinical skills and experiences and learn from each other.
I would highly recommend this to everyone if you are eager to be a nurse, and if you are willing to deliver the best and outstanding care possible within Team NUH, then go for it!
You will love it! It is the best opportunity for everyone EVER
Meet Megan, Scientist Training Programme

Megan Kendellallen is in her 2nd year of the Scientist Training Programme (STP) who has completed a degree apprenticeship in Neurophysiology.
Neurophysiology centres around studies of the nervous systems and their mechanisms. Staff in this area investigate the function of the central and peripheral nervous systems to help diagnose neurological disorders such as epilepsy which affects around 1% of the UK population.
Megan said “Doing a degree apprenticeship at NUH has enhanced my work-based skills and application of knowledge much further. I have gained confidence and people skills I would not have got from learning in a classroom."
"My advice for anyone thinking of doing a degree apprenticeship is to go for it. Having practical experience will always be a benefit to you!”
Meet Sarah, Data Analyst

My name is Sarah and I am a Data analyst for NUH
Embarking on the Data Fellowship apprenticeship at NUH has been a transformative experience for me. As someone who has always been curious about data, this opportunity has not only deepened my understanding of how data impacts patient & staff care but also allowed me to directly contribute to improving processes in my workplace.
NUH is the perfect environment for this journey—its commitment to innovation and professional development inspires me to grow both personally and professionally.
My advice to anyone considering an apprenticeship is simple: go for it. It's a hands-on way to gain valuable skills, challenge yourself, and open doors to opportunities you might not have thought possible. Plus, you get to learn while contributing to something meaningful—a win-win!
Meet Sam, Gastro Administration Apprentice

"I started my apprenticeship in October 2024 and chose an apprenticeship at NUH, because I wanted to have a career in customer service, and I also wanted to work in the NHS.
My apprenticeship has so far helped me to gain the skills and experience to one day become employed in a permanent position at NUH.
I would like to advise people to take the leap and apply for an apprenticeship position at NUH, it will be a decision you won't regret!
The support and guidance I have received is fantastic, my management and colleagues are wonderful, and the Widening Participation team have been great."
