24 hours in A&E Series 2, Episode 8: See the Light

In the latest instalment of 24 hours in A&E, staff and patients from Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) share incredible stories of facing immense personal and professional challenges. They offer an insight into battles that tested their strength, resilience, and spirit, but through it all, they found hope, courage, and a way forward.

The eighth episode of the brand-new series of 24 hours in A&E will air on TV screens tonight, Thursday 3 April, 9pm on Channel 4.

In this episode, 56-year-old Chris has been airlifted to QMC after being involved in a crash on his motorbike at 40mph. Major Trauma Consultant, JJ is on duty and must act quickly to save Chris’s leg from amputation. We hear from JJ throughout the episode on his pathway to becoming a doctor, and how his role now is to give people hope in the darkest of times.

Elsewhere in the resuscitation ward, 53-year-old chip shop owner, Mike has come into the department after slipping off a domestic bin whilst trying to compact rubbish at home. Doctors are concerned with Mike’s deterioration and need to understand the full extent of his injuries. We hear how Mike came to the UK as a child, after his Greek Cypriot family fled the island of Cyprus during the Turkish Invasion of 1974 and rebuilt their lives in Nottingham.

NUH first welcomed cameras from production company, The Garden into QMC’s Emergency Department (ED) in 2021, the first series to be filmed outside of London. Cameras returned to QMC in 2023 to bring you another series of healthcare professionals working around the clock to save the lives of patients throughout Nottingham and beyond.

Airing weekly on Channel 4, 24 hours in A&E highlights the dedication of our staff and the resilience of those seeking emergency care.
