24 hours in A&E Series 2, Episode 9: State of the Nation

Tonight, Thursday 10 April, episode nine of the brand-new series of 24 hours in A&E will air on our screens at 9pm, on Channel 4.
Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) first welcomed cameras to one of Europe’s busiest A&E departments at Queens Medical Centre (QMC) in 2021. Cameras then returned in 2023 to film another series of this inspiring documentary.
As the nation prepares to celebrate a defining moment in British history, the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, we hear from staff and patients at QMC about how their own defining moments shaped their lives and of those around them
35-year-old Richard has been rushed to the resuscitation ward after collapsing at his home after experiencing severe abdominal pain. The consultant on duty Dr Umar is concerned about Richard’s barely conscious state, which could be a sign of organ failure and orders an urgent CT to establish the cause of his collapse. Richard’s mum. Janette. is there by his side and opens up about Richard’s childhood and how a painful family loss impacted their lives.
Handyman Colin has come into A&E after cutting his hand with a Stanley knife when he was working on a roof repair. While staff on duty tend to Colin’s open wound, we hear about his rollercoaster journey on how he became a CEO of a company in his twenties which led him to having a mental breakdown.
Advanced Clinical Practitioner Marijke is on shift in the paediatrics department. While tending to a young boy, whose hand had been hit by a car, Marijke reflects on her journey to becoming a medic in the UK from the Netherlands and how going through loss became the reason as to why she wanted to become a nurse.
The latest season of 24 Hours in A&E hit our screens in February 2025, giving us an eye-opening glimpse into one of Europe’s busiest emergency departments. It’s a powerful reminder of the dedication, quick thinking, and teamwork that goes into providing care under pressure.
