Healthcare regulator publishes reports on maternity services at Nottingham hospitals

Care Quality Commission finds improvements, but Trust recognises there is further to go
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has recognised improvement within maternity services at Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) in its latest inspection report, published today (Wednesday 26 March).
However, leaders at the Trust recognise that more must be done to improve the standard of care for women, babies and families.
The report follows inspections of the maternity units at the Queen’s Medical Centre (QMC) and Nottingham City Hospitals in June and July 2024.
The report has upgraded the ‘Effective*’ domain for maternity at both sites to Good, having previously been Requires Improvement.
Maternity services overall remain as Requires Improvement, and the individual ratings for the other domains all remain the same; Good for Caring; and Requires Improvement for Safe and Well-led.
Anthony May, Chief Executive at Nottingham University Hospitals said: “I would like to thank the CQC for their inspection in 2024. The findings detail some of the improvements that we see in the delivery of our services but also underline that we have further to go.
“I recognise that these inspections took place after colleagues in maternity services contacted the CQC directly. I want to thank them for their courage in speaking up.
“We are working hard to provide all staff with the best culture and environment to deliver care. It is their hard work, alongside feedback from the independent review and from families, that is progressing the improvements highlighted by the CQC. I want to thank our colleagues for their commitment to the people who use our services, and to each other.
“Importantly, the CQC found that women and families are treated with kindness and compassion, and that our environments are predominantly safe and deliver good outcomes.
“All breaches of regulation raised during the inspection have been addressed and we have provided the CQC with an action plan to assure them of compliance.
“We know that more must be done to improve the quality of care that women and families receive, but our communities can be assured that we are moving in the right direction.”
