Walking routes launch at hospital in memory of 'Little Miss Sunshine'

Nottingham University Hospitals Trust has created three walking routes around the site which were originally developed for a patient with cystic fibrosis.

‘The Sunshine Walks’ are colour coded walks around the City Hospital site, so staff, service users and visitors can explore and enjoy the benefits of greenspace and exercise.

They were designed back in 2014 / 15 by a team of physiotherapists, after a patient, nicknamed ‘Little Miss Sunshine’, wanted to exercise and remain active whilst at the hospital.

‘Little Miss Sunshine’ passed away in 2016, but her legacy lives on through these routes which the staff at Therapy Services have worked tirelessly to bring to reality.  Sunshine Walk route markers

Fiona Haynes, one of physiotherapist who developed the walks said “I think ‘Little Miss Sunshine’ would be quietly proud that something which started as an idea from her, has led to the walks being signposted so that many patients, visitors and staff are now aware of them and can use them too.”

There are maps of the routes at the three entrances of City Hospital. Way marking the routes is part of a collaboration between NUH physiotherapists, Nottingham Hospitals Charity – who funded the signs - and the Active Hospitals project.

Staff and family members walking one of the routes Jo Mcaulay, Active Hospitals Project Lead said “Walking in the outdoors is great for our wellbeing. These walks can be completed while waiting for a friend or family member to finish their appointment, in between treatments, or over a lunch time. We hope they inspire and encourage people to be more active."
