Welcome to the HPB department

The Nottingham Hepato-Pancreatico-Biliary (HPB) service treats patients with diseases of the pancreas, bile duct, gall bladder and the liver.

The Nottingham HPB Service is both a local and regional tertiary referral centre for all aspects of HPB disease and we are a centre of excellence for laparoscopic (keyhole) HPB surgery.

We serve the East Midlands Cancer Network and cover a catchment area of over two million people in Nottingham, Mansfield, Lincoln, Boston, Grantham, Derby and beyond.

Our clinics

Our outpatient services include face-to-face and telephone appointments. Your appointment type will be specified in your appointment letter. We run clinics at Nottingham University Hospitals, Kings Mill Hospital, Derby & Burton Hospital and Lincoln & Pilgrim Hospitals. If you have any queries ahead of your appointment, including if you require support from an interpreter, please contact the team documented on your appointment letter.

Our services

Our service provides specialist care and support for a range of conditions including:

Gallbladder conditions

  • Gallstone disease
  • Polyps
  • Cancer
  • Dyskinesia

Bile duct conditions:

  • Obstruction (obstructive jaundice)
  • Gallstones (choledochallithiasis)
  • Cancer (Cholangiocarcinoma)
  • Damage to the bile duct from surgery.
  • Infection (cholangitis)
  • Auto-immune disease (e.g. PSC, IGG4)

Pancreatic conditions:

  • Acute pancreatitis
  • Chronic pancreatitis
  • Cancer of the pancreas (adenocarcinoma and neuro-endocrine tumours)
  • Non-cancerous masses and cysts of the pancreas

Liver conditions:

  • Infections (Liver abscesses, cholangitis)
  • Benign (non-cancerous) liver growths.
  • Primary liver cancers
  • Secondary liver cancers
  • Portal hypertension (a side effect of pancreatitis and other conditions)

Symptoms:

  • Pain
  • Jaundice
  • New onset diabetes (pancreatic endocrine insufficiency)
  • New onset bowel malabsorption (pancreatic exocrine insufficiency)
  • Weight loss
