Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering support clinical teams and patients by providing high quality, accurate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures; optimising the use of technology harnessing this for effective and safe patient care and providing expertise to ensure the best use of resources.

Clinical Neurophysiology
We provide a regional service investigating the function of your central (brain and spinal cord) and peripheral (nerves outside your brain and spinal cord) nervous systems.
You are likely to be referred to us by your hospital consultant if you are experiencing seizures, pins and needles, episodes of weakness or are having trouble with your sleep (amongst many other reasons).
We have particular expertise in spinal cord monitoring during scoliosis surgery, recording brain activity over long periods in Intensive Care settings and performing complex sleep studies in children.

Nuclear Medicine
The Nuclear Medicine Department has clinics at both City Hospital and QMC. The department has four gamma cameras, providing a wide range of imaging tests. Non-imaging investigations (such as Glomerular Filtration Rate measurements) are also undertaken.
Molecular Radiotherapy services are provided at the City Hospital site.
Nottingham is a leading nuclear medicine department, which actively participates in clinical trials and carries out scientific and clinical research. Nuclear medicine research undertaken at the University of Nottingham is also supported by the department.

Radiation Physics
We provide a comprehensive range of scientific and technical support to NUH, other local NHS trusts, Universities and private healthcare providers. Our main activities include:
- Radiation protection support for customers using ionising and non-ionising radiation
- Specialist advice on radioactive waste disposal and environmental radiation protection
- Research activities in all areas
- Providing governance support to a large number of clinical trials

Radiotherapy Physics
Radiotherapy Physics provides comprehensive scientific support to the Radiotherapy department.
We are a highly specialist service with extensive expertise in the physics of radiotherapy, which is essential for safe, accurate and effective radiotherapy treatment. As part of our commitment to consistently deliver a high quality service, we work within a British Standards Institute certified quality management system.
Radiotherapy physicists and technicians are an integral part of the team, and work closely with clinical oncologists and therapeutic radiographers to deliver the best possible treatment outcomes for all patients. We play a key role in the implementation of new technologies and advanced techniques.
