Please follow these steps to prepare for your appointment

We will send you a letter with details of your appointment day, time and place.

  • Try to arrive 10 minutes before your appointment time to allow for your observations to be taken. Allow 60-90 minutes for your appointment. Some patients may need longer than this.
  • Eat, drink and take your medications as normal on the day of your appointment.
  • Bring your most recent prescription or a list of your current medications.
  • Bring communication aids if required e.g. hearing aids and glasses.

Do you require hospital transport or interpreting services? Please inform the Pre-Op Assessment Admin team as soon as possible prior to your appointment.

Please be aware that a staff meeting takes place every morning so you will not be able to access the units until 08:15am

If you arrive more than 15 minutes late for your appointment your slot may be rearranged.

If you do not attend the appointment without contacting us your surgery may be cancelled.

Anaesthetist appointments

An anaesthetist is a doctor who puts you to sleep or numbs part of your body before an operation. Their role within the pre-operative assessment department is to work closely with the pre-operative assessment practitioners and surgeons in order to ensure the safety of patients.

For certain operations or if you have a complex medical history, you may be required to see an anaesthetist.

If you receive two letters it means you have an appointment with a nurse and also with an anaesthetist. You need to attend both appointments.

Travel and Parking

There is free parking at both Wilkinson Street and Queen’s Drive Park and Ride sites, with a Medilink bus service to both hospitals.

The tram runs to QMC hospital.

Parking on the hospital sites is limited, please allow plenty of time for this.
