Getting help is often one of the most important but difficult steps in overcoming addiction. That is why we are here to help you get the help and support you need for things like smoking, alcohol and drug abuse, and gambling addictions.
Free support is there for you if you are struggling with addiction. Take a look at the support offered below to help you.
Support to Stop Smoking
Staff of NUH can find out about support to stop smoking through your line manager or by emailing nuhnt.smokefree@nhs.net, even if you live outside of Nottingham.
You can also get three months of access to the Pro features of the Smoke Free app and a 12-week free supply of nicotine replacement products or a vale and e-liquid refills. All this and 24/7 access to expert stop-smoking advisors for support when you need it most.
You can download the Smokefree app, available on iPhone and Android.

Support For Alcohol Dependence and Addiction
Support for Alcohol Abuse and Family Groups
The Alcohol Care Team (ACT) is located within the Drug and Alcohol Liaison Team (DALT) at NUH. The ACT has a leaflet that details the benefits of cutting down and relevant support services located in Nottingham City, Nottinghamshire, Derby, and Leicester. The DALT intranet page also offers advice on safe ways to stop drinking and alcohol withdrawal.

Alcohol and Neurodiversity
Neurodivergent people can experience alcohol differently to neurotypical people and this can happen in a range of ways. There are some extra risks when it comes to drinking for neurodivergent individuals, for example, individuals with ADHD are more vulnerable to harmful drinking, with up to 43% developing an alcohol-use disorder over the course of their lifetime

For family and friends of alcoholics, support is available to get help through information and groups such as Al-Anon UK. They additionally offer a helpline at 0800 0086 811.
Nottingham Recovery Network
Nottingham Recovery Network offers support for those concerned about others drinking who live in Nottingham City Centre. They run a supportive group and one to one sessions, with up to 6 sessions available. The group takes place over at Cafe Sobar every Wednesday and covers topics such as conflict, boundaries, co-dependency, self care and how addiction affects familiar.

Nottingham Grief Support
Specialist support for people who have been bereaved by substance misuse
What is offered:
The project is delivered by Wellness in Mind, a specialist mental health service for Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. Interventions are delivered by trained Grief Intervention Workers, supported by a team of psychologists. The team do not provide therapy, but are trained in different supportive approaches to work with those experiencing difficulties after a bereavement. The support we offer is structured. We will listen and work with you to set goals for our work together. After assessment of your needs, we can offer up to 6 sessions of individual work, followed by access to a peer-support group for people bereaved by substance use.
Who is eligible:
Support is available for anyone over the age of 18, who lives within Nottingham City boundary, or who is registered with a Nottingham City GP. You do not need to have any diagnosis or other professional support relating to your bereavement to access our service. We aim to work flexibly to accommodate the different needs of all those accessing our support. This might include provision of large print resources, access to videos, or remote sessions for those who are not able to travel.

Local Support
East Midlands Gambling Harms Service
If you live in Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, or Rutland, you get free access to the East Midlands Gambling Harms Service, which provides treatment for gambling issues, including workshops and therapies delivered by phone or MS Teams.

On the last Thursday of every month, TimeOut, in partnership with GamCare and Nottingham Recovery Network, run an appointment-based clinic in the Wellbeing Hub Nottingham (73 Hounds Gate, NG1 6BB). Here you can explore and discuss any gambling harms and worries with a trained professional and complete a referral in to treatment and support if you wish.

National Support
GamCare
GamCare is a charity dedicated to helping problem gamblers and their families and friends;

GamCare operates the National Gambling Helpline (free and confidential), providing information, advice and support for anyone affected by gambling harms (including gamblers as well as family and friends who are impacted).
Advisers are available 24 hours a day on Freephone 0808 8020 133 or via web chat. -
Offer a range of free treatment services (online and over the phone for now), as well as a moderated Forum and daily chatrooms so that people can speak to others experiencing similar issues and seek support.

Has developed a self-assessment tool that can help people find out more about their gambling behaviour and how it impacts on their life. Answering a series of statements will then provide people with a breakdown of how gambling affects their life, including time spent gambling, stakes risked, finances and relationships.

GamCare Youth Programme provides a free, confidential 1-2-1 structured support for anyone aged 11-25 affected by gambling harm, including through cryptocurrency and gaming. This service also provides support, advice and signposting for parents, families and professionals.
Gamblers Anonymous
Gamblers Anonymous is a fellowship of people who share their experience with each other to solve common problems. Aids including a forum, a chat room, literature and a meeting finder. There are many different types of meeting including ones for newcomers, people who have abstained from gambling for some time, women-preferred meetings, LGBTQIA+ meetings and sessions where friends and families can also attend. No appointment is needed, you can just turn up to meetings.

It’s important to know that if you’re trying to give up gambling there are many ways you can stop or limit your gambling to help yourself feel more in control. Find out more about gambling blocking and self exclusion.
Limiting gambling ads online
If you're trying to quit gambling, the amount of gambling advertising you see could make it more difficult.
To make your journey to reducing or stopping gambling as successful as possible, you can also try to limit the gambling ads that you see on social media channels and the websites you visit. Gamble Aware have advice on how to limit and block gambling ads online.
How is gambling affecting me quiz
Gamble Aware have also created a short quiz which takes a few minutes to complete and will start to give an insight into how gambling might be affecting you, or someone you care about. Once complete, you will be provided with tailored support should you want it.

Support for Friends and Family
Gamble Aware
If someone’s gambling is causing you concern, Gamble Aware can help. Their advice can help you find support for yourself, as well as understand the risks and signs of gambling harms. They also have advice on how to have positive conversations with people who gamble.
GamFam
GamFam is a lived experience support network for those affected by another's gambling issues. Meetings run remotely via Zoom which means they are able to help and support more people in more locations without any natural barriers to location. Meetings are hosted by trained GamFam facilitators and usually have between 6 to 10 members, with the option of 1 to 1 Peer Support if required.
Gambling With Lives
Gambling With Lives is a charity set up by families bereaved by gambling that provides support, raises awareness of gambling disorder’s devastating effects, and campaigns for change. If you’ve been bereaved by gambling-related suicide, they can help. Their Family Service offers Bereavement, Investigation, Community, Campaigning and Therapeutic support for families and friends bereaved by a suicide directly caused or influenced by gambling.
