City student creates Nottingham landmarks mural for hospital
An activity room in a ward caring for older people has been revamped with a mural featuring Nottingham’s famous landmarks.
Robin Hood, the Left Lion and the Castle are just some of the city’s trademark features captured by Lucy Davies, an art student at Nottingham Trent University, for the mural in ward B49.
“A lot of our patients are Nottingham born and bred and they love it,” said Ward Manager Cherry Lane.
The once-unloved room now has a variety of uses. “We encourage those patients that are able to to eat their dinner in there, and we encourage families to use it when they visit, rather than sitting at the bedside. It’s also a good place for those difficult conversations we sometimes have to have,” said Cherry. “And it is a great place for staff to have a break.”
The room was kitted out thanks to a funding bid to Nottingham Hospitals Charity and the generosity of people on Facebook, who donated DVDs, books, Christmas decorations, etc.
“People have been unbelievably generous,” said Cherry. “We’ve got loads of DVDs, we just need a DVD player to be able to watch them!”
The room has sofas, bookshelves, tables and chairs – even a piano. And, at the moment, a lovely Christmas tree – kindly donated by B&Q. The Trust’s CEO Anthony May and Chairman Nick Carver visited yesterday ahead of the patients’ Christmas party.
“My team are amazing,” said Cherry. “I’m so grateful to my team every day; I had a vision and they brought it to life.”
